1897

First informal schoolroom set up by Mary Kimball Morgan above a carriage house at her home, 4333 Morgan Street, St. Louis, Missouri.

1898

The school officially opens at 4484-4486 West Morgan Street, October 17.

1898

The name "Principia" adopted.

1899

Dormitory for boarding students opens.

1899

Mary Baker Eddy approves Mrs. Morgan's idea of founding a school and authorizes her to call it a "Christian Science school."

1900

Gold and blue chosen as school colors.

1901

Page Avenue campus purchased.

"As the sowing, the reaping" adopted as school motto.
1906

First Upper School class graduates.

Alumni Association organized.
1912

Board of Trustees established, along with the formal incorporation of the school.

1913

First issue of The Principia Alumni Purpose magazine appears.

1917

First class graduates from Junior College.

1922

Dads' Club formed.

1923

Progress at Principia magazine established.

First Christian Science lecture given at Principia by Bicknell Young.
1924

The Principia Mothers' Club organized.

1928

ABC League formed for interscholastic athletic competition for boys.

1931

Ground broken for the Chapel, one of 13 buildings on the new College campus designed by distinguished architect Bernard Maybeck.

1934

First bachelor of arts degrees conferred at College commencement ceremonies held in the Elsah Chapel.

1935

College moves to Elsah.

1937

First Alumni Weekend.

1938

First Mothers' Club calendar produced.

1939

First Public Affairs Conference, on the topic, "Making Democracy Work."

1941

Accelerated war program inaugurated on Elsah campus, including extra physical conditioning.

1943

Patrons' Association organized.

1945

Property in St. Louis County purchased for new campus.

1947

Golden Anniversary of Principia.

1948

Publication of As the Sowing, the history of Principia's first 50 years.

1952

First Summer Session for adults at the College.

Course in the history of the Christian Science movement introduced at the College.
1955

Pre-Schoolers are the first to move to the new campus.

1956

First Principia Abroad study/travel program.

1960

Upper Schoolers complete the move to the new campus.

1965

Education at The Principia>, a compilation of Mrs. Morgan's talks and writings, is published by the Trustees.

1971

Inauguration of PACE (Principia Adult Continuing Education) Abroad programs.

1974

First week-long alumni reunion.

1983

College women's tennis team wins NCAA Division III national championships.

1984

College athletic teams change name from Indians to Panthers.

1987

Dawn Leonard Larmer is the first woman since Mrs. Morgan to be appointed to chair the Board of Trustees.

Lower School expansion and new classrooms added.
Maybeck renovations begin at the College.
1993

College campus designated as a National Historic Landmark.

1996

Construction begins on largest building project ever undertaken at the College, the Science Center.

1997

Publication of A Century of Progress: A Pictorial History of The Principia.

1998

Centennial year celebrations mark the 1997-98 school year.
