In the fall of 2001, our faculty and administration began a collaborative curriculum process (Acorn through Upper School). Initially, all faculty members composed monthly curricular maps consisting of Essential Questions, Content, Skills, and Assessments to share with one another. After reviewing each others' maps, teachers then regrouped into subject area strands to identify and agree on Academic Standards that align with The Intended Outcome of a Principia Education to guide and link all instruction. To expedite this process, Principia now subscribes to TechPaths, a curriculum-mapping web-based program. This system allows us store, read, update and refine our in-house curriculum maps that will constantly guide our curriculum.
As the process moves along, this website will display and update documents that will explain our academic program.
Documents that are in place that inform our instruction:
- Education at The Principia by Mary Kimball Morgan (with its Appendix: Purpose and Policies of The Principia ).
- The Principia Mission Statement
- Principia's Statement of Educational Philosophy
- The Intended Outcome of a Principia Education
Documents that are being developed as a result of this curriculum collaboration process:
[The Intended Outcome of a Principia Education is being used as a basis to align and design all other curriculum documents].
1. Principia's Essential Curriculum:
- Academic Standards
with categories (designated areas of instruction)
- Benchmarks (specific expectations for standards by grade and course)
- A Scope and Sequence for content
2. A curricular home page for each subject strand.
3. A curricular home page for each division area.
We thank you for your interest as we work on the various stages of our curriculum process.
