Advising Information

Each student is required to have an academic advisor. Students with more than one major will have an advisor for each major. An academic advisor supports and challenges students as they make educational and career decisions. Your advisor(s) will need to sign the Advising Registration Agreement (ARA) during your advising appointment so you can register. During drop/add week, however, advisors must sign white cards Wednesday through Friday for you to register.

Who will be my advisor?
New students are assigned an advisor by Academic and Career Advising (ACA). When you declare a major, you will choose your Advisor from the available faculty in that department. Advisor List

Can I change my advisor?
Yes, you can change advisors. If you would like to talk to someone about details of the change, please contact ACA. Students may change advisors anytime after New Student Orientation, by filling out a “Change of Advisor/Major/Minor/Degree” form, available from the Registrar or from Academic and Career Advising.

How do I find an advisor in my major?
Take introductory courses in the major from a variety of faculty members. This will allow you the opportunity to get to know the department, and for them to get to know you. Principia’s faculty members have varied backgrounds and interests, so you can usually find an advisor who is knowledgeable in the areas you would like to investigate further.

Do I need an advisor for a minor?
Some minors require an advisor. This advisor will sign your “Change of Advisor/Major/Minor/Degree” form available in the Registrar’s Office and ACA) and meet with you as often as needed to make sure your minor is on track.

Students thinking about declaring a minor should always consult with the Department Chair prior to declaration. Most minors do not require you to have an advisor. Programs offering minors list the requirements for a minor in the Academic Program section of the college catalog.
