Externships
What is an Externship?
Principia’s Externship Program provides a chance for Principia students to “shadow” Principia alumni professionals in their places of work for five days during the first week of the College’s 2009 Spring Break (March 16-20, 2009). During an externship, students get to experience, first hand, the day-to-day working of a professional office in a selected industry. They are hosted by an individual alumnus who serves as their guide for the week and who will help them learn about the company’s structure, work environment, and daily routines. They also have opportunities to attend meetings, visit with employees in other departments, and attend client and vendor meetings. Who can be an Extern?
The program is open to all Principia College sophomores, juniors and seniors, who are in good standing with the college. On-line applications are available during the first few weeks of winter quarter. Students in all academic majors are invited -- and encouraged -- to apply. When applying, students review a full list of available externship opportunities, and indicate their first five choices (although specific externship placements are not guaranteed). Click here to view 2009 opportunities. There are opportunities in many fields. Who Sponsors Externs?
Individual Principia alumni apply to become Extern Sponsors. Their applications are reviewed by the College’s Alumni Association Board, and by the College’s Academic and Career Advising staff, based on a clear set of guidelines. Sponsors represent a wide variety of different businesses, institutions, and non-profit organizations. Financial institutions ... scientific labs... advertising/marketing firms ... social service agencies ... manufacturing companies ... law offices ... media outlets ... design companies ... and more! What Does It Cost?
Principia charges NO fee to participants. However, students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the externship location, their housing and meals, and for their daily living expenses during the week. Details are available on the student Externship Application. ACA and the Alumni Association Board can help students find housing if needed. How do I apply to be an extern?
