Instructor: David
Coughtry
Prerequisites: None
Material and skills covered:
This class is for the dedicated art
student with a love for painting. It is also for the artist who desires to round
out a portfolio with a series of works (or one large work.) For practicality,
study will center on the history of Still Life painting --- its importance as a
genre of discipline and variation for the contemporary painter. Using domestic, manufactured and
nature-derived subjects, projects will extend through many paintings, in order
to gain facility with handling and color. After exploring outstanding examples
of painters who practice the genre, students will be asked to create a series
of works with a focus on consistent content and technique.
Methods used:
Daily structure will center on painting
sessions, discussions, occasional critiques (depending on the size of the
class), frequent individual contact with the instructor and technical
demonstrations as needed.
Grade determined by:
Students are expected to come to this
class prepared for learning and to be motivated by a spirit of honest inquiry.

Attendance policy:
A minimum of 15 hours of painting in
the studio per week is the norm. All
class members should be present and working. Time away from class is to be made
up. Self-discipline and desire for
growth are character traits that will make the experience of this seminar
productive and rewarding. For an excused absence, the instructor must grant
approval. Arrangements are to be made for completion of missed assignments.
