ENGL 230: Themes: Interpretation of Literature

Instructor: V. Slachman

Prerequisites: None

Material and skills covered:

This is a class in understanding and interpreting different forms of creative writing. We’ll consider poetry, fiction, and drama over the course of the quarter; the reading list will include poetry, short stories, one novel, and a play. Our study will focus on the formal elements of each form, and the class will observe how these elements work together to forward meaning. Students will be expected to engage thoughtfully with the texts, become adept at identifying aspects of each written form (elements such as, for example, point of view, voice, plot, etc.), and be able to construct written analyses of how elements of form function to produce meaning.
