HIST 313:  Africa

Material and skills covered:

Sub Saharan Africa extending roughly from Senegal in the west, to Sudan in the East and South Africa in the South from the time of early African civilizations through the period of colonial conquest to liberation, independence and modernization

 

Methods used:

Students will devote some time to researching early African civilizations through anthropological studies and comparing the African cultures to the kinds of societies created under European imperialism.

 

Grade determined by:

The grade will be judged on the research and writing skills reflected in their written papers (40 percent); on their exams (40 percent) and on their oral presentation (20 Percent), based on a topic of their choice

 

Attendance policy:

There will be no formal attendance policy for this upper level course, but persistent absenteeism will impact the final grade

 

Comments:

This course endeavors to present a non-western perspective to encourage a multicultural approach in the world.
