MCOM 110:  Introduction to Mass Communication

Material and skills covered:

Introduction to Mass Communication is a survey course of the various media that impact our lives daily, if not hourly. In between an introductory week and a wrap-up week will be individual weeks devoted to Newspapers, Magazines, Radio, Television, Film, Public Relations, Advertising and the Internet. Most of the media we will examine provide a mixture of entertainment and information. We will look more closely at the news and information side, with special emphasis on writing for various media. Assignments will vary as well, ranging from writing a news story based on a staged news event to recording and filming radio and television segments.

 

Methods used:

The format will vary. In addition to lecture, discussion and in-class exercises, the media under study in any given week will be heavily employed, be it newspapers, magazines, radio recordings, TV or film.
