MUS 101:  Introduction to the Symphony

Material and skills covered:

Rudimentary musical concepts and terminology will be covered at the outset.  As the course progresses, the language of music will be developed along with basic listening and analytical skills.  Master composers to be studied will include Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann, Berlioz, Brahms, Mahler, Strauss, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and others.  Basic research skills will be introduced for short written assignments.  Students will compile their own listening and study guides on the repertoire covered.

 

Methods used:

There will be daily listening assignments and readings on composers and their music.  Most class periods will include listening to and talking about the assigned music and composers.

 

Grade determined by:

Listening and written exams; study guides; written assignments; class attendance and participation.

 

Attendance policy:

Daily, punctual attendance is expected unless an absence is previously approved.
