MUS 140:  Fundamentals Advanced

Prerequisites: Music background


 

Material and skills covered:

Basic theory and musicianship skills: note reading and identification, reading of clefs, keys and key signatures, chords, ear training, rhythm development, sight singing, interval identification, hymn singing and analysis, basic keyboard skills.

 

Open to all students interested in learning the fundamentals of music. 

 

Required for entry into the music theory sequence, which begins in winter quarter.

 

Methods used:

Daily homework, class discussion and performance of assignments, review of all written theory assignments, melodic and rhythmic dictations, group singing of hymns.

Attendance policy:

The success of the class depends on your daily preparedness and participation.  Note that three unexcused absences may lower your grade.

 

Comments:

This is a music skills class. The music department offers both a beginning level (Music 139) and more advanced level (Music 140) divided according to previous skill development and experience in music.  Please consult with the music faculty if you think that you have already exceeded the 140 level of theory.
