PE 026—Baseball Theory and Practice

Prerequisites:  None

 

Equipment and apparel needed:

  1. Athletic shoes
  2. Athletic clothing (socks are a must—NO JEANS)
  3. glove (optional if you have one)

 

Material covered and skills developed:

The course will be divided into two components:  On-field practice and classroom learning.  During the on-field practice, students will be taught the fundamentals of the game of baseball such as:  Hitting, throwing, fielding, and pitching.  Each player will be given the chance to use video analysis to observe their own batting mechanics in comparison to current and past Major League baseball stars. 

 

During the classroom learning, students will be taught the origin and history of the sport of baseball.  Students will also be taught how to properly keep statistics during a baseball game.  If possible, the class will attend a St. Louis Cardinals game to watch the game being played at the highest level.

 

Methods Used:

There will be periodic short quizzes on certain aspects of the game of baseball in order to prove comprehension and understanding of the sport.

 

Grading Scale and Criteria:

The standard grade range of A,B,C,D,F will be used.  Grades will be determined by three criteria: 

  1. Participation and Attendance 40%
  2. Effort                                      40%
  3. Quizzes                                 20%

 

Attendance Policy:

Three (3) unexcused absences by a student will result in that student being dropped from the course with a failing grade.  Any excused absences must be negotiated prior to class unless an emergency arises.

 

*Remember that effort is a big part of your grade.  This class should be fun for all and will give you an appreciation for America’s favorite pastime.
