PHIL 221: Topics: Film & Philosophy

Material and skills covered:

This course is a 5-quarter hour survey of philosophical ideas as they appear in films and written texts. Students will be expected to engage in discussion about philosophic themes as they appear in film and text. The course is not a philosophical study of film, so much as it is a study of philosophical ideas through film.

 

Methods used:

This class will require a strong desire to engage in rational discussion about movies that goes beyond the initial entertainment value.  Students will be involved to some extent in presenting material for discussion. 

 

Grade determined by:

Class participation will be essential to doing well in this class. This includes attendance, involvement in discussion, and the occasional presentation of course related material.  There will be several short papers on the various materials that we cover in class and one final research paper.

 

Attendance policy:

I allow excused absences, but excessive absences will adversely affect your grade
