SPAN 102:  Elementary Spanish

 Instructor: A. Marquez

Recommended Prerequisites: 101, placement by test or consent of instructor

Material and skills covered:

Spanish 102 is the first course in a two-quarter sequence, completed with Spanish 103 the following quarter (spring). Students will work towards the goal of achieving communication survival skills in Spanish, including the ability to discuss events occurring in the past, present, and future.  Attention is given to the basic language acquisition skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as fundamental cultural knowledge and sensitivity.

Methods used:

Students engage in active oral work in class (exercises, communication practice, simulations). In addition, the course typically includes a weekly small-group conversation session with a native speaker.  Students work in the Language Center with audio and video materials.

Grade determined by:

The student’s progress and mastery of the material are assessed on the basis of class participation and effort, completion of assignments, regular written and oral proficiency testing including a midterm and a final exam or project.

Attendance policy:

Regular attendance is required; unexcused absences affect the grade.

Comments:

This course, together with 103, allows the student to complete his/her language requirement.  If at all possible, plan to take 103 in the spring rather than leaving it to the following year (this would be a long time to wait and the course text may change).
