SPAN 110: Elementary Review

Instructor: A. Marquez

Prerequisites: Recommended: High school experience with languages and placement through the Principia Foreign Language Department

Material and skills covered:

Spanish 110 is an advanced beginner level of Spanish language acquisition within the first year sequence of Spanish.  The student should already have some basic vocabulary and a good command of  verb conjugation and speaking in the present tense.  This level of attainment may correspond to one or more years of Spanish study in high school with some communicative skill.  Usually these students come close to testing out of the all-college language requirement.

Emphasis will be given to developing comprehension and speaking abilities about past events while continuing to practice the present tense.

There will be a multi-media use approach with the textbook which will include viewing interviews about current events and topics with native speakers as well as listening and recording short articles to improve listening comprehension and pronunciation.

Cultural knowledge and awareness will be a goal of this course assisted by the reading and listening of authentic materials that aim at developing cultural competency in understanding Hispanic culture both in Latin America, Spain and in the United States. The attainment of cultural competency for this level entails a reflective process and a desire to be part of promoting cross-cultural tolerance and understanding.

Methods used:

This is an oral proficiency outcomes oriented course in which students will be asked constantly to practice speaking in many ways including pair share conversations,  small group conversations with native speakers and speaking with the professor in the classroom.

There will also be worked assigned in the language laboratory.

Grade determined by:

The grade is determined by unit tests, quizzes, oral proficiency tests, homework and participation including conversation sessions with native speakers.  There usually is a mid-term exam and a final test or project.

Attendance policy:

Attendance is required; unexcused absences subtract points from your final grade.  A pattern of unexcused absences may result in a referral to the scholastic committee for course removal with a failing grade.

Comments:

This class emphasizes all the major components of language learning: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural competency.
