THEA 101:  Acting 1

Instructor: Trish Brown

Prerequisites: None

Material and skills covered:

We will focus on three areas:  the understanding and importance of ensemble work, communicating non-verbally, and basic acting techniques such as imagination, objective and character development.   Freedom, discipline and creativity are all skills that will be developed through this work.

Methods used:

Relaxation exercises, ensemble-building exercises, theater games, and basic object exercises to enhance concentration and encourage creativity will all be used. There will also be a strong emphasis on the beginning acting techniques of Stanislavski.  Vocal production and movement work will be a focus in this course as well.

Grade determined by:

Class participation, text analysis work, scene and individual presentations, quizzes, daily exercises and progress reports will all be used to determine the final grade.

Attendance policy:

A large part of theatre work is discipline.  This is a theatre lab course.  Because daily participation is required for growth, daily attendance is required.  Two unexcused absences will result in the lowering of the final grade.  Two late arrivals equal an absence.

Comments:

This course will help any student understand the inherent ability within themselves to express creativity and to communicate with others in a unique, free and expressive way.
