RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
I spent the summer of 1992 as a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow (SURF) at CalTech, studying interstellar dust grains under the supervision of Mike Werner. This involved the analysis of IRAS satellite data.
I have been a member of the FOCUS collaboration since 1994, and have been involved in several aspects of the experiment.
Hardware experience:
I participated in the construction, testing, and commissioning of the inner muon hodoscope, which consisted of 464 scintillation detectors.
Algorithm development:
I helped to design the inner muon identification algorithm, working specifically on an improved c2 distribution that included the Gaussian errors from multiple coulomb scattering in addition to the “granular” errors from the finite detector widths.
Monte Carlo:
In addition to the work done on the muon, Čerenkov, and PWC detector simulations, I also significantly reworked the FOCUS Monte Carlo event generator. This program has been very helpful in dealing with the complexities of the more capable event generator.
Data skimming:
I co-authored (with one other collaborator) the FOCUS skimming control software for the secondary skimming stage, which was performed at six member institutions.
Analysis:
My primary analysis work was in measuring the form factor ratios which led to the first observation of interference in semileptonic charm decay.
Computer Experience:
I have experience with Unix (Linux, OSF1, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, etc.), VMS, and MS-Windows, and have extensive programming experience primarily in Perl, Fortran, Tcl/Tk, C, C++, and Java
Teaching Experience:
I worked as a tutor in the math department during my junior and senior years as an undergraduate. My first year of graduate study was spent as a teaching assistant in two courses of the introductory physics series.
