This course will bring together the disciplines of Geology, Studio Art, Art History, Cultural Studies, English, and Writing in a study of the literal and figurative marks that have been made through geological, creative, and cultural processes of the past. Toward this end, students will examine and interpret objects of study within each discipline as artifacts, or traces, of history. In doing so, they will be tracing the processes and history that produced these objects and will be leaving marks of their own in writing, sketching, painting, etc. These marks become the traces of a communal learning experiment that will, itself, become a part of history as the program progresses and comes to a close.
