Committee on Publication Letter
Phone: (847) 841-1700 2007-2008 PLEASE READ BEFORE FILLING OUT FORM Dear Friend, The form you have requested applies to one or more religious accommodations in law. These provisions allow individuals with certain religious beliefs and practices to be accommodated in law. Usually they require some sort of written objection to medical requirements. The accommodation form fulfills this role. As Christian Scientists our exercise of law based on our religion represents both a freedom and responsibility-based on a thoughtful, active choice to rely on prayer and Christian Science treatment instead of medical procedures or treatment. The form should not be used to avoid medical requirements or care because of a dislike or objection to shots or medical exams. Christian Science provides treatment that is systematic, active, and practical. It is based on effective healing prayer that is both preventive and curative. And it is very important to realize that laws that accommodate religious beliefs do not exempt one from reasonable and responsible conduct. While use of this form is based on law and is voluntary on your part, it may not always be granted automatically. Sometimes school, camp or governmental officials may not be aware of the religious accommodation. You may need to inform them of the law and explain the practice of Christian Science as it applies to this law. Of course, we hope it would be natural to sincerely express gratitude and love to those who so carefully watch and care for children today. Please note: The Committee on Publication office does not give legal advice to members. I can give you general information about certain laws of this state and related religious accommodations. However, I cannot interpret those laws nor provide advice or guidance to individuals about what health care choices they make for themselves or their children. Included in this packet is a request for religious accommodation regarding immunization for college or university students. Sincerely, Scott P. Seagren |
