Nomads, Hutongs, and Wal-Mart: Westernization's Impact
Topic
How has westernization affected small-town America, Beijing's hutongs, and Mongolia's Nomads?
Abstract
This paper is a series of anthropological case studies on the effects of westernization on three traditional societies. Each case study focuses on a traditional community from a different country and explores the effects of westernization. The communities studied an American small-town, Beijing's hutongs, and Mongolian nomadic families. For this project, westernization is defined as western-oriented corporate business structures, industrialized settings, and a capitalistic consumer culture. This paper will explore the different impacts of westernization on existing cultural traditions; specifically it will examine aspects of westernization that destroy cultural traditions. This is a comparative exploratory research and both qualitative and quantitative elements. This study expects to show that westernization has a material detrimental impact on traditional culture. It also attempts to come up with some cultural preservation strategies in the face of westernization.
