The Soviet period in Mongolian history extended from the early 1900's until about 3 years ago when Mongolia became a democracy. The Communist party is still one of the major ones in Mongolia. The Soviet influence is seen in the buildings and in the language. Mongolian traditional language is vertical and looks very much like Sanskrit; their modern language uses the Cyrillic alphabet and is horizontal. Both are taught in the schools. This statue of Lenin is one of several Soviet heroes around Ulaanbaatar.
