After the Wars: Is Peace-Building Possible?
Recent experiences have left the impression that conflicts are never-ending and that efforts to restart societies and nations are doomed to failure. That is not necessarily the case. Many lessons have been learned in the past fifteen years, both by the United States and the United Nations, that should be applied to future challenges. This talk will explore some of the most important theories and look at current cases, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, and possible upcoming situations, such as Pakistan and Nigeria, and offer constructive direction. Frederick Barton is a senior adviser in the International Security Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, co-director of the Post-Conflict Reconstruction Project, and an expert on the United Nations’ Iraq Study Group.  Barton is a regular writer, commentator, and contributor to global public discussions. For the past five years, he was also a visiting lecturer at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. His résumé includes twelve years of experience in thirty global hot spots.
