While Metanoia Expeditions gives students opportunities to experience stunning mountain ranges and learn about wilderness living from expert guides, it is not really about backpacking.

Metanoia was founded on the idea that we are “wired” to hear God’s leadings for direction in life’s deepest questions. The busyness of school rarely gives students time for the consecrated prayer that can open one up to the reality of God’s guidance. Metanoia is here to give them that opportunity for solitude, stillness and profound spiritual listening.

The word Metanoia means, “a shift of mind; a direct knowing of the Highest; of God.” The feedback from the students on Metanoia’s first trips would indicate that this is precisely what happens. Whole days of solo...

Jonathan Daugherty serves as the team leader, and helps students prepare for meaningful solo time. Ben Doerr, Steve Vernon, and Sune Tamm-Buckle are all graduates of extensive programs with NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School). They are all certified in WFA (Wilderness First Aid) and are certified Maine Trips Guides. They have all led trips for Camp Owatonna, and Metanoia Expeditions. They’ve also gone through training with Project Adventure and understand group dynamic issues. They are passionate about wilderness experiential learning, and will be pursuing careers in this field.
"I grew so much from this trip. From learning how to work better with a group and seeing amazing examples of leadership to expanding my sense of self-worth and my relationship with God. I cannot put into words all that this trip did for me. It has been an amazing five days."
"I gained a whole new appreciation for God on this trip. Spending time in the beautiful wi derness awakens a sometimes dormant feeling of God’s presence in me. I enjoyed the solos tremendously and really delved into deep prayer, and felt a sense of Love during that time as well as during the whole trip. The leaders did a great job of having fun with us while keeping focused on God."
"I am leaving this trip on fire about divine Love, and I am eager to see the good effects as I put this fearless love into practice
in my daily life."
"This trip made me rely on God in a way that everyday life does not. A wilderness setting contains a lot more urgency than a 'civilized' setting, and the difference between good and bad decisions is a lot more immediately apparent. This trip also gave me a deeper appreciation for the Bible and Science and Health as well as an enhanced emphasis on the importance of time with God in my day and daily life."
...time alone in the wilderness like so many Biblical
characters have a way of bringing clarity to one’s deepest life questions. The groups also come together in shared tasks like cooking, and they share with each other what has come to them during solo time around campfires. The trip leaders are credentialed, experienced wilderness guides who offer some coaching in what it means to listen.
The Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings are central in this learning about the kind of preparation of the heart that reveals what God has already done. It’s about the willingness to open one’s heart to the reality of divine Love in settings that truly inspire. When that willingness
is there, special things happen.
