James Hegarty's compositions have been performed throughout the United
States, in Europe, and the Pacific Rim. He has received several awards and
grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant to develop and produce
his multimedia opera, "The Soul of the Rock." Several of his electro-acoustic
compositions have been presented at the national conferences of the Society for
Electro-acoustic Music in the United States. His compositions have been featured
on festival programs at the University of Michigan, University of Memphis, and
University of the Pacific.
Hegarty's recreation of history's first opera, "Euridice Remix," was
performed to a standing-room-only audience at the Contemporary Art Museum St.
Louis in the spring of 2002. Recently he was a featured composer at the Bonk
Festival of New Music in Tampa, Florida. His multimedia theatre work, "The Lost
Mansion of Sojourn," received its premiere in New York with subsequent
performances in Montreal and St. Louis. The work features real-time projected 3D
computer imagery and live performances of surround sound and music. He performs
regularly in St. Louis at such venues as the Galaxy, the St. Louis Art Museum,
and on concerts presented by the New Music Circle.
Before joining the Principia faculty, he was the head of the music department
at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, where he initiated the music
technology program. His early career included work as a commercial music
producer in Chicago with broadcast clients nationwide. He also worked in
symphony orchestra administration at organizations including the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra.
He is a member of the board of directors of the New Music Circle, the oldest
new music presenting organization in the United States. Up-to-date information
