Coach Gavaletz begins his first season as head football coach for PrincipiaCollege.He has been with the program since fall of 2000, and will be the Offensive Coordinator and quarterback coach this season. His coaching style is innovative, enthusiastic, and disciplined. He is a competitor who places a high value on results and an even higher value on character education.
In his eight years at Principia, Gavaletz has coached all phases of the game, but has especially enjoyed his time on the offensive side of the ball.In 2002, he coached the offensive line that led the conference in fewest sacks allowed. As the Offensive Coordinator and receivers coach in 2005, the offense was ranked #33 in passing offense in Division III and boasted a pair of top ranked receivers. Schuyler Onderdonk ranked 14th in the nation in receptions per game and 18th in yards per game in Division III, while Ian Wightman ranked 26th in receptions per game. In 2007, Gavaletz will look to continue this aggressive, attacking, passing oriented offense.
Gavaletz is a graduate of PrincipiaCollege, where he majored in Sports Management, lettered in football and track and field. He earned the Willard and Corde Hanzlik Athletic Award for his overall athletic contributions and accomplishments in both sports. “Gav” is married to his college sweetheart and classmate Tami (McMullen) Gavaletz, who works for PrincipiaCollege.
Coach Jones enters his second season as the Defensive Coordinator and defensive backs coach of the PrincipiaCollege football team. He brings to the field a high-energy coaching style and a strong desire to tap into the potential of each and every one of his players. He believes strongly in Mary Kimball Morgan’s statement: “A real Principia product is well-balanced individual whose whole nature is expanding under the guidance of Principle. His ideals are high, his purpose is lofty, and his efforts to attain the goal set before him are steady and untiring.He is willing to work hard and to make sacrifices, if necessary, to attain his goal” (Education at The Principia).
Jones has 24 years of coaching experience and has a passion for the game of football. In 2007, Jones will continue the aggressive style of defense that earned two players from the Principia College Defense national recognition for total tackles in a season; Jeff Gibbs ranked fifth and Tim Bruns ninth in total tackles in Division III football.
Jones is a graduate of PrincipiaCollege, where he lettered in baseball and football. He earned the Principia College Football Senior Award. Jones and his wife Libby have seven wonderful children and are active in their church and community.
Coach Douglas is new to coaching this year and will be assistant coaching the offensive line. Although Douglas doesn’t have much coaching experience, he has played offensive line for over 8 years and was a four-year starter for the Panthers in college.
A 2007 graduate, Douglas graduated with a B.S. in Physics and a minor in Mathematics. We look forward to having him join the 2007 football staff.
John Oyer graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1979. Over the past thirty-two years, John has coached all aspects of the game. He has also coached basketball, wrestling, track, soccer, swimming, diving, baseball, and downhill skiing. While at UNC in Greeley, Colo., John lettered in football and soccer. One of the highlights of his career was signing with the Denver Broncos in 1983 as a place-kicker. Being waived after the pre-season was over, John continued to teach Physical Education in the Jefferson County Schools in Colorado and coach at his high school alma-mater. John is extremely happy to be coaching at PrincipiaCollege, where he is able to relate how Christian Science plays a big part in athletics.
Coach Hawley enters his third year of coaching at Principia, and his second year aiding the linebackers on defense. Hawley graduated in 2003 from Principia with a B.A. in Sport Management. During his college years, Bobby was a captain and four year letter-winner on the football team. He gained recognition his senior year for being voted the Most Valuable Defensive Player by his teammates, and achieving the rank of 11th place in Division III for tackles. A natural athlete, Bobby also lettered in track & field and baseball. Since graduation, Bobby has worked as a Personal Trainer for his hometown gym in Sacramento, California, and also spent some time in high school classrooms substitute teaching. This year, in addition to football, Coach Hawley will be assisting the baseball team for the winter and spring quarters, and studying for a coaching certification in strength and conditioning.
