PRINCIPIA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

View 2006-7 Season Pictures

The ten-member St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Association (of which Principia is a member) provides an exciting environment in which to play NCAA Division III basketball. Basketball teams in the conference are traditionally strong with the league champion receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Since 1990, six individual Panther players have been NCAA Division III leaders in point production, steals, and field goal percentage, while thirteen team members have been selected to All-Conference teams. Recently, a Prin athlete was selected as the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the Conference Tournament.

Philosophy

Principia's women's basketball program actively seeks players who have a strong desire to strive for excellence both on and off the court. A love for basketball, the ability to devote oneself to a team concept of play, and the desire to raise skills to the highest level are common characteristics of a Principia Panther woman basketball player. Athletics is an integral part of a student's educational experience. We strive to provide a forum where all aspects of the whole man can be demonstrated at their highest level.

Facilities

Principia plays all its home games in Hay Field House, which seats 1,000 and boasts a newly-refurbished hardwood floor. Hay is the nucleus of the Athletics Department, housing our weight room, locker rooms, laundry facilities, and offices. We have one of the best facilities in the region and regularly host teams from the greater St. Louis and Chicago areas, giving us a wide range of good competition. This range was further expanded in late November 1997 when the team traveled to New York City to play several other Division III schools and to sightsee.

Training

While formal practice begins in late October, it is recognized that a year round dedication to increasing individual skills and athletic ability is needed to compete at the highest levels of achievement. In the off season, individual guidance and workouts are provided to help the student athlete build a strong fundamental base. This fundamental focus is continued throughout the regular season as athletes master the offensive and defensive team concepts necessary for success. Since Principia Women's Basketball is characterized by aggressive full court defensive pressure and a hard hitting fast break offense, a high level of individual conditioning is encouraged to allow players to optimize the tactical training they receive during the season.

Games begin before Thanksgiving and continue through February. An annual team road trip to participate in games and tournaments outside the SLIAC is a highlight of the early season.

Goals

(1) To serve the cause of Christian Science.
(2) To create an environment where all aspects of the Whole Man can be actively demonstrated.
(3) To build a sense of team unity and singleness of purpose.
(4) To consistently focus on the "perfect model".
(5) To provide an atmosphere where student athletes can demonstrate dominion over limiting beliefs and suggestions.
