Campus House is a nursing facility for The Principia School where students, staff and the Christian Science community can come for outpatient care needs, and where boarding students can stay if care needs prevent them from remaining in the dorms. This building is nearly 40 years old and is in need of facility renovations, including new bathrooms, replacement windows, carpeting and updates to décor and furnishings.
An atmosphere conducive to healing is essential to Campus House. Providing a supportive structure that is practical, welcoming and in good repair is a necessity.

The library is an important part of the educational program at both the Lower and Middle School levels, but the current facility lacks adequate space and does not fully meet the varying academic needs of the students it serves. The planned expansion will alleviate space issues and provide a more suitable reference, learning and study area. Beyond the library redesign, this project also includes establishing a new entrance for Middle School and making science classroom space improvements in the Middle School wing.

Installing carpeting in the Lower School hallways is greatly needed. The current floor treatment is extremely hard to maintain, and visible cracks and bumps create a perception that the building is not well maintained. In addition, hallway noise is made worse by the current flooring.
Carpeting will enhance the attractiveness of the building for students, visitors and prospective families. It will help lessen the noise that flows into classrooms.

This project will help Upper School biology students become better caretakers and stewards of the natural resources within the community through the creation of an on-campus recycling staging area.
By collecting and separating materials, learning the lifecycles of these materials and preparing them for recycling pick-up, students will experience firsthand the importance of taking responsibility for their environment. Understanding how their lives interconnect with natural resources and the world, allows students to become good stewards of their environment.

Funds donated to last year’s Annual Fund have allowed Principia to further embrace education of the whole man. A large portion of this project is dedicated to bringing in speakers whose life experiences exemplify the convictions of Principia. The talks by Melba Beals at both The Principia School and at Principia College are one such example. Melba made civil rights history in 1957 as one of nine high school students who volunteered to integrate Little Rock’s Central High. This project also provided the funding that allowed third graders to partner with students from Jewish, Muslim and Catholic schools for cooperative learning and communication activities.
Students are learning professional stage production techniques for assemblies, talks, and drama productions in their frequently used, multipurpose gym. Ladders have been retired as the method to reach and move stage lights, replaced by buttons on a console that are able to remotely move and redirect overhead lighting to illuminate the action taking place below. The caliber of the traditional sixth-grade drama production is particularly improved by this lighting system, which provides greater flexibility and lighting options. Even the last row in the audience can appreciate the skillful lighting provided by the backstage crew.
Countless boarding students from years gone by remember the snack bar as a traditional gathering spot after study hall. This year the boys' dorm snack bar moved up to a more convenient social setting, on the first floor next to the housepops' office, to become the main attraction for hungry boys before lights out. Serving from a newly remodeled space with updated fixtures, utilities, and serving window, the snack bar faces a hub of activities in the lobby area.
Offering sandwiches, fruit, pizzas, chips, and sodas, the snack bar keeps active boys fed and is run by a student staff that learns lessons in accountability and responsibility.
This powerful instrument allows for complex mixtures of chemicals to be separated, identified and quantified, making it ideal for the analysis of the hundreds of relatively low molecular weight compounds found in environmental materials. Currently, the spectrometer used by our Chemistry and Biology departments is antiquated. It also relies on outdated software and can no longer be serviced by the manufacturer, due to the equipment’s age. This project replaces the outdated instrument with a new one.
Students should expect to have access to resources that are relevant and necessary for their coursework and field of study. Biology and Chemistry students will most greatly benefit from this project’s completion.

What began as a non-credit engineering project for a physics class in 1991 has evolved into Principia College being recognized worldwide as a solar car powerhouse. Ra 7, the latest solar car, is being designed and built for competition in July 2008. This project will provide the funds necessary to complete the remaining parts of this solar car, including the chassis, body telemetry and other electrical systems. Additionally, funds will be used to support the team’s participation in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge.
The Principia College Solar Car Team has raced against dozens of teams and hundreds of cars, many from leading engineering programs. The consistent high performance achieved by Principia College cars has granted Principia College an elite status among many of the best and most respected engineering programs and provided positive media accolades. There is great pride among students for the achievements of the Principia College Solar Car Team.

For the past 15 years, the Templin Television Studio and Control Room has relied on the same equipment for all college broadcasting initiatives. As technology continues to advance, this studio equipment has become outdated, and in some cases, obsolete. This project will update the required equipment in order to better meet student educational needs and to allow the school to broadcast content in a manner consistent with today’s technology.
This project will provide the greatest benefit to Mass Communication majors, and for attracting future students interested in pursuing this field of study. Many other students will also benefit, as more professors look to incorporate video presentations into their course curriculums.

By updating old analog equipment with industry standard digital equipment, Principia College’s student radio station will have the ability to broadcast over the web to current and prospective students, family and friends and alumni anywhere the internet is available. This project will allow for more expansive programming including talks, concerts, news updates, student radio shows, educational projects and promotional announcements for Principia activities to be shared among a wide Principia audience.
This project opens new opportunities for more students to get involved in creating and producing internet radio programming. In addition, students will gain hands-on experience utilizing digital technology. As more and more programming evolves, students will enjoy sharing more campus events and activities with their family and friends via the internet, as well has having greater access to information of interest for themselves.

Every two years, the Mass Communication, Political Science and Media Services departments join forces to plan for and produce four to five hours of live national election coverage. Political science students provide the program content, while mass communication students produce the broadcast. Planning begins nearly a year in advance.

Contributions to the Annual Fund have allowed major work to begin for the design and construction of Principia’s new solar car. To date this has consisted of a new motor and controller, solar cells, body supplies and a primary battery pack. Work is underway by the Electrical Team to optimize the new battery, and the Body Team is currently working on the mold that will be used to fabricate the body of the solar car.
The future of Principia's soccer teams is looking brighter than ever. With new soccer field lights under a night sky, more fans are packing in to cheer on our men's and women's soccer teams. Principia has taken an already great sporting venue to the highest level, giving fans the opportunity to attend evening games. Athletes have the freedom to play without worrying about sacrificing class time due to conflicting schedules.
A newly design gallery space, frequented by visitors and student studying in the Marshall Brooks Library, gives College artists the optimum opportunity for the display and viewing of their artwork. Featuring black walls to make artwork "pop," additional spotlighting, and a wall surface that facilities display, the new gallery brings sophistication and vitality to art exhibits. Former Principia professor James Green was the first artist to have his work exhibited in the new gallery.
