Focus
Mathematics
usage in our society has expanded dramatically in recent decades.
The information explosion and advances
in technology
have widened the scope and multiplied the methods of applied
mathematics. Each of our algebra and geometry courses has
a mixture of algebra, geometry, discrete mathematics, and
statistics and
probability integrated into the study of functions. Students
daily read mathematical content, learn problem-solving
methods, review previously learned concepts, and use
a wide range
of applications. In all math classes, graphing is emphasized
for visualizing concepts.
Recent technology enhances the study of math. The math
lab with its 20 PCs is used at appropriate times. Algebra
1 and
Geometry
students must have their own scientific calculators, while
students in all other math classes must have their own
graphing calculators.
We recommend the TI-83 grapher, costing about $90.
The Math Department urges that most students take four
years of mathematics; and because computing is a discipline
that
influences nearly all other disciplines, we suggest that
students take at
least one course in computer study. Department Faculty
