Marquette Juvenile Detention Center
PM
is a minimum-security correctional facility for male juveniles between
the ages of 13 to 20 located in Grafton, IL.
Principia College students have been volunteering here for over
30 years. During this time,
students have shared different activities with the PM residents, like
tutoring, men’s basketball, discussion groups, or art/music/mime/drama
activities. This quarter,
we will offer a GED tutoring program Monday through Friday from weeks
3-9. To fulfill state
requirements, all volunteers must undergo background checks, be
fingerprinted, take a drug test (urine sample) and a TB test.
Alton
after School Tutoring
Principia
College students tutor elementary school children in an after school
program, organized at Eunice Smith School in Alton.
Each PC student works under the supervision of a trained teacher
in a group with 6 elementary students.
They each tutor one or two students, depending on the # of
college volunteers available. On Tues. and Thurs. about 90 2nd - 5th
graders are tutored in these small groups.
Big
Brother/Big Sister
Big
Brother/Big Sister is a program where PC students are matched with a
Jerseyville teenager who has been deemed “at risk” by local juvenile
probation/parole officials. Students
must have their own car or be authorized to drive Principia vehicles.
This can involve sharing some event like a sports activity or just
discussing ideas. A two-quarter commitment is expected for this program.
Students meet with their young friend once a week for a few
hours.
Pets
on Wheels
The
Pets on Wheels program supports the elderly in a nursing facility in
Jerseyville. On scheduled Saturday afternoons, PC students will take a
Principia pet (dog or cat) to the facility and the residents enjoy
receiving visits from the pets as well as talking with the students.
Alton
Homeless Shelter
The
Salvation Army in Alton runs this local 30-bed shelter.
On scheduled Saturday mornings, Principia College students will
caulk and paint in the interior building as needed.
This winter quarter, students will finish an interior paint
project in the women and children’s wing of the building.
Oasis
Shelter for Battered Women
Oasis
is a shelter for women in the Alton community that are seeking refuge
from an abusive domestic violence situation.
While the women receive counseling, our students take care of the
women’s children. The
students plan activities, games and art projects providing loving care
for the children. You may choose to sign up for one weeknight, either Wed. or
Thurs.
